Social Security is a program through which more than 90 percent of working Americans are building protection for themselves and their families against the reduction of income that comes with retirement, disability or death. The basic idea of the Social Security system is a simple one. During working years, employees, their employers and self-employed people pay Social Security taxes, which go into special trust funds. Social Security benefits are paid from these funds.
In addition to benefits paid because of retirement, disability, or death, Medicare is also available to many Americans. Medicare provides protection against the high cost of health care to Americans 65 and over, as well as some disabled beneficiaries.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) also administers the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program which makes payments to aged, blind, and disabled people in financial need. These payments are made from general revenues of the United States Treasury, not from the Social Security trust funds.
There are more than 1,300 Social Security field offices located nationwide. The eight states in the Atlanta Region contain 251 field offices; 9 Area Directors Offices, 3 Teleservice Centers; 31 Hearings and Appeals Offices; and 1 Program Service Center. Approximately 7,800 people are employed by the Atlanta Region Social Security Administration.
Because millions of Americans depend on the Social Security program, we are looking for qualified people to help us accomplish our mission of serving the public's Social Security needs. Of the many positions SSA has to offer, a substantial number of these fall into a category of jobs often referred to as "public contact" positions. Service representatives, claims representatives and telephone service representatives are in this category. SSA employees in these positions receive not only good opportunities for career growth, but also the satisfaction of knowing that their efforts contribute significantly in ensuring that beneficiaries receive their Social Security benefits in the right amount, at the right place, and at the right time. SSA also offers a variety of positions that are away from the public eye. Many of these jobs are in the claims examining area with job titles such as claims authorizer, benefit authorizer, and disability examiner.
