The goal of the Social Security Administration (SSA) is to improve core services provided to the public and provide alternative methods for conducting business with the agency. In support of this goal, SSA provides a wide range of Internet services to allow the public to conduct business via this widely used medium. For example, SSA offers members of the public who receive benefits the opportunity to change an address via the Internet. Over the past 4 years, our change of address workload has grown and so has the use of the online application. Our goal is to make it easier and faster for individuals to change their address via the Internet from the comfort and convenience of their homes or offices.
Agency Program Description
The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers a number of online applications that provide beneficiaries an alternative to visiting the office. You can change your address and/or telephone number online if you receive Social Security disability, retirement, or survivors benefits. In order to use the online change of address application, a beneficiary must live at and be moving to an address in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Samoa. The system allows only the beneficiary to provide address changes to their own account. The changes are sent to a database and updated to the Master Beneficiary Record (MBR). If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you cannot change your address online. If you are a Representative Payee, you cannot use this online service. If you have a foreign,, APO, or FPO address, SSA’s Office of International Operations is assisted by the Department of State’s embassies and consulates throughout the world to assist Social Security customers who are outside the U.S. or planning to leave the U.S.
This dataset provides monthly volumes at the national level from federal fiscal year 2008 onwards for Internet Change of Address.

Internet Social Security Change of Address Applications
The dataset includes only Internet Change of Address transactions. It should be noted that, in addition to using our online Change of Address application, the public might change an address by calling our 800 number, visiting a field office, or mailing us the request. This dataset pertains only to the online alternative.
Data Collection Description
We get internet front-end activity counts from SSA's Online Change of Address Application. We capture the transactions when public users access the application. We store the transactions nightly in the Electronic Services Operational Data Store (ODS). The next day we take the data from the ODS and store it in the Data Warehouse.
Field A: Federal Fiscal Year, a federal fiscal year runs from October 1 through September 30.
Field B: Month (by District Office Workload Reporting Month), the reporting month indicates the month the data was produced. Reporting months are administratively set reporting periods and do not necessarily correspond exactly to calendar months.
Field C: Internet Social Security Change of Address Applications, indicates the number of change of address applications submitted via the Internet.
Field D: Comments, includes information about a particular month’s data collection and/or reporting.
